How to make a ballet bun:

Crown

High bun for soldiers

Low bun for mice

You will need:

  • Water

  • Hair spray &/or hair gel

  • Bobby pins &/or hair pins that match your hair color

  • Hair tie to match your hair color

  • Hair net to match your hair color

Instructions:

  1. Wet hair

  2. Slick back smoothly into a ponytail lined up around the top edge of the ears.  Gel and hairspray hair to help smooth hair and secure flyaway hairs.

  3. Twist hair and start to wrap it around the ponytail, securing with bobby pins and hair pins as you go around.  Be sure to get a little bit of hair from the head and a little from the twisted ponytail into the pin together.  This helps secure the hair to the head.  For very thick hair it can be helpful to separate the hair into two twists and doing one wrap at a time.

  4. Wrap hair net around the bun.  Depending on the size of the bun, the hair net can wrap 2-4 times around the bun.  Using a hair net secures any loose hairs.  Complete the bun by securing the hairnet with a few bobby pins.

  5. Finish by giving the head one final spray.

Note:  if securing a head piece, use bobby pins to help secure the headpiece into place.

Please send extra bobby pins/hairpins and hairspray with your dancer.

How to Apply Makeup

You will need:

  • Foundation

  • Concealer (optional)

  • White and brown eye shadows

  • Eye shadow brush

  • Black pencil eyeliner

  • White pencil eyeliner

  • Eyebrow pencil (same color as eyebrows)

  • Q-tips

  • Eyelash curler

  • Mascara

  • Blush Brush

  • Pink Blush (one darker shade and one brighter)

  • Lip pencil (color corresponding to lipstick color)

  • Lipstick (red)

Instructions

  1. Apply Primer- Dot primer on forehead, cheeks, and chin.  Blend the entire face so that the whole face is covered evenly in a layer of primer.  Allow the primer to soak in.

* Primer creates a barrier that prolongs makeup and helps it stay fresh for longer.

  1. Apply foundation- Dot foundation in a similar fashion to Step 1 and blend out.  A tinted moisturizer or lightweight foundation is suitable for young children.

  2. Apply eye makeup- Dust brown shadow from the eyelid up to the eye crease.  Color below the eyebrow with a white shadow.   Line the upper lash line with a black pencil eye liner.  Use white pencil on the outer crease of the eye.  Curl the lashes with a lash curler to accentuate the lashes.  Apply mascara to the lashes.

*Eye makeup is a crucial step of applying stage makeup.  The eyes should pop out dramatically so the audience can see a dancer’s expression.  Makeup should appear exaggerated and be heavier than everyday makeup.

  1. Apply blush- Swirl the blush brush in pink blush and tap onto the apples of the cheeks.  Without picking up additional product, buff the blush to create a natural-looking flush without any harsh lines.

  2. Apply lipstick- Line and fill the lips with a lip liner.  Apply lipstick and blot with a tissue.

  3. Apply faux lashes(optional)- Apply lash glue to the faux lashes with a Q-tip and allow the glue to reach a tacky consistency (approx. 10seconds).  Gently apply the lashes to the lash line and press the lash down using the end of a small makeup brush or your fingertips.  Once lash glue has dried, go over faux and natural lashes with mascara to blend hairs together.
